In Tokyo you will see motorbikes with strange contraptions on the back of the bike:

That thing on the back of the motorcycle is a 出前機 demae-ki でまえき, a device that stabilizes loads and makes food delivery easier. According to Wikipedia, there are two major manufacturers of these devices:

  • マルシン Marushin
  • エビス麺機 Ebisu Noodle Machine

In my quick search, Marushin is mentioned much more often (マルシン出前機 / Marushin Demae-ki / Marushin Delivery Device). According to Wikipedia, the Marushin device was used to carry the Olympic Torch at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
